Description

This wonderful object can be found between the border of the constellations of Monoceros and Canis Major.  This roughly circular H II region is known as IC 2177 and SH2-292.  At its heart, there is a young bright star about 20 times the mass of our Sun beaming away, HD 53367.  To my eye, it almost looks like it has consumed the surrounding dust and gas creating a pocket holding a celestial perl.  I like how the dark contrasting rivers add a little more depth.  IC 2177 was discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts.  He described the nebula as "pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse.

My instrument doesn't have a large field of view to capture the complete Seagull Nebula, and this is more the head of the seagull.

The image was constructed using both Narrowband and Broadband data, seven filters in total.   The different filters were applied to create a colour image.   I enjoy imaging targets that have both reflection nebula (in this scene, it is illuminated by the bright central star) and emission nebula that can be quite dramatic.
